Dream Tap Veteran Assistant Coach to Lead Franchise

Smesko Brings Decades of Experience to Atlanta

The Atlanta Dream have hired Karl Smesko as their new head coach, the team announced Tuesday. Smesko, who has been an assistant coach in the WNBA for 12 seasons, will take over for interim head coach Darius Taylor, who led the Dream to a 14-20 record in 2022.

Smesko, 61, has a wealth of experience in the WNBA, having served as an assistant coach with the Chicago Sky, Indiana Fever, and Dallas Wings. He also spent two seasons as the head coach of the Tulsa Shock in 2015 and 2016.

Smesko is known for his defensive acumen, and his teams have consistently ranked among the league's best in that area. He is also a strong communicator and motivator, and his players have praised him for his ability to get the most out of them.

"Karl is a proven winner with a track record of success in the WNBA," Dream general manager Dan Padover said in a statement. "He is a great tactician and motivator, and we believe he is the right person to lead our team to the next level."

Smesko said he is excited to join the Dream and is eager to get to work with his new team.

"I am honored to be the head coach of the Atlanta Dream," Smesko said. "This is a great organization with a rich history, and I am excited to be a part of it. I believe we have a talented roster, and I am confident that we can compete for a championship."

Smesko's hiring is a significant step for the Dream, who are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2022 season. The Dream have not made the playoffs since 2018, and they are hoping that Smesko can help them return to contention.

Smesko will be introduced to the media at a press conference on Wednesday.
