Boeing Starts Layoffs
10% of Workforce to be Cut
Layoff Notices Begin
Boeing has started sending layoff notices to employees, part of a plan to cut 10% of its workforce, or about 2,000 jobs, amid the coronavirus pandemic's impact on the aerospace industry.
The company had previously announced the layoffs in April, but had not yet begun informing employees. The layoffs are expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Boeing has been hit hard by the pandemic, which has caused a sharp decline in air travel and led to the cancellation of orders for new planes. The company has also been struggling with the grounding of its 737 Max jet following two fatal crashes.
The layoffs are part of Boeing's broader plan to cut costs and weather the downturn in the aerospace industry.
The company has also announced plans to reduce production of its 787 and 777 aircraft, and to close its plant in Everett, Washington.
Boeing is not the only aerospace company to announce layoffs in recent months. Airbus, the European plane maker, has also announced plans to cut 15,000 jobs.
The layoffs are a sign of the severe impact that the pandemic is having on the aerospace industry.
The industry is facing a number of challenges, including the decline in air travel, the grounding of the 737 Max, and the trade war between the United States and China.
It is unclear when the aerospace industry will recover from the pandemic.
But the layoffs are a reminder that the industry is facing a difficult period.
