FGCU Women's Basketball Coach Karl Smesko Departs for WNBA's Atlanta Dream

Longtime Eagles Coach Leaves After 16 Seasons

After 16 seasons at the helm of the FGCU women's basketball program, Karl Smesko has announced his departure to join the Atlanta Dream of the WNBA as an assistant coach.

A Legacy of Success

Smesko leaves FGCU as the program's all-time winningest coach, with a record of 349-154. Under his leadership, the Eagles won four ASUN Conference regular season championships and two ASUN Tournament titles. They also made seven NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 berth in 2019.

A Difficult Decision

Smesko's departure comes as a surprise to many. He has expressed his deep affection for FGCU and the Southwest Florida community. However, he ultimately decided that the opportunity to coach in the WNBA was too good to pass up.

A New Chapter

Smesko will join an Atlanta Dream team that is led by former FGCU star Erica Wheeler. He will be responsible for player development and scouting.
