Frank Lampard Wins First Trophy As A Manager As He Beats Liverpool On Penalties To Win The Carabao Cup
Liverpool dominated the game but Chelsea were more efficient in the penalty shootout
Frank Lampard has won his first trophy as a Chelsea manager after his side beat Liverpool 11-10 on penalties following a 0-0 draw after extra time in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
Kepa Arrizabalaga saved the decisive penalty from Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson to give Chelsea their first major trophy since winning the FA Cup in 2018.
It was a cruel end for Liverpool, who were the better side for most of the game and had chances to win it in normal time and extra time.
Chelsea had a penalty shout turned down before half time
The best chance of the first half fell to Chelsea when Christian Pulisic was brought down in the area by Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher, but referee Stuart Attwell waved play on.
VAR checked the incident but did not overturn the decision, much to the frustration of Chelsea.
Liverpool dominated the second half but couldn't find a goal
Liverpool started the second half strongly and had a number of chances to take the lead.
Roberto Firmino had a shot cleared off the line by Andreas Christensen, while Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane both went close.
The game went to extra time and then penalties
With neither side able to find a breakthrough in normal time, the game went to extra time.
The extra period was just as tense and cagey as the first half, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances.
The game then went to penalties, with Chelsea eventually winning 11-10.
Lampard hailed as a hero by Chelsea fans
Lampard was full of praise for his players after the game.
"I'm so proud of the players," he said.
"They showed great character and determination to win the trophy."
Klopp disappointed but proud of his players
Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp was disappointed with the result but proud of his players.
"We played well but we couldn't find a goal," he said.
"I'm proud of the players for the way they played."
