GM recalls 80k Vehicles Over Transmission Issues
What Happened?
General Motors has initiated a massive recall of nearly 80,000 vehicles due to a transmission problem that might cause them to lose power while driving.
The recall encompasses 2019 and 2020 Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras, along with 2020 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savanas.
Background of the issue
The issue arises from a defective electronic transmission range switch, which can misinterpret the gear position. This malfunction could lead to the vehicle losing power unexpectedly or failing to start.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it received 110 complaints about the problem, with some drivers reporting near-crashes due to loss of power while driving at highway speeds.
Action Taken
GM will notify affected owners by mail, instructing them to take their vehicles to a dealership for a free inspection and repair.
The repair involves replacing the electronic transmission range switch and reprogramming the transmission control module.
What GM Says
GM spokesperson Dan Flores said in a statement that the company is "aware of the issue and is taking action to address it."
He added that GM is cooperating fully with the NHTSA investigation.
What to Do if You Own an Affected Vehicle
If you own a 2019 or 2020 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, 2020 Chevrolet Express, or GMC Savana, you should contact your local GM dealership to schedule an inspection and repair.
