GOP House Picks Brian Mast as Chief Vote Counter
House Republicans have chosen Representative Brian Mast of Florida to be their new vote counting chief.
Mast, a freshman lawmaker, will take over leadership of the House Republican Policy Committee from Representative Gary Palmer of Alabama who is retiring.
The Policy Committee is responsible for developing and promoting the party's legislative agenda.
Mast, a former Army Ranger who lost both legs in an explosion in Afghanistan in 2010, is a member of the House Armed Services and Veterans Affairs committees.
He is also a outspoken critic of President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party.
In a statement, Mast said he was "honored" to be chosen to lead the Policy Committee.
"I look forward to working with my colleagues on the committee and with our Republican leadership team to develop and advance policies that will make a positive difference in the lives of all Americans," Mast said.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said Mast was a "rising star" in the Republican Party.
"Brian is a principled conservative who has dedicated his life to serving our country," McCarthy said.
"He is a strong advocate for our veterans and for our national security, and he will be a great asset to our team."
Palmer said he was "proud" to have served as chairman of the Policy Committee and that he was confident Mast would do a "great job" leading the committee.
"Brian is a smart, hard-working, and dedicated public servant," Palmer said.
"He has a bright future ahead of him, and I know he will be a valuable member of our leadership team."
The Policy Committee is one of four main committees in the House Republican Conference, along with the Budget Committee, the Steering Committee, and the Republican Study Committee.
The Policy Committee is responsible for developing and promoting the party's legislative agenda.
The committee also helps to coordinate the party's messaging and to develop strategies for winning elections.
The Policy Committee is chaired by a member of the House Republican leadership team.
The current chairman is Representative Gary Palmer of Alabama.
The committee is composed of 30 members, who are appointed by the House Republican leadership team.
The committee meets regularly to discuss and develop the party's legislative agenda.
