Heavy Rainfall Forecast for Portions of Puerto Rico, USVI; Flash Flood Watch Issued
National Weather Service Issues Flash Flood Watch for Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Flash Flood Watch for portions of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, effective from 8 AM AST Wednesday, July 12th, 2023, to 8 PM AST Thursday, July 13th, 2023.
Affected Areas
The Flash Flood Watch is in effect for the following areas:
- Puerto Rico
- Vieques
- Culebra
- US Virgin Islands
Forecast
Heavy rainfall is expected across the affected areas, with rainfall rates of 2 to 4 inches per hour possible. Isolated areas may receive up to 8 inches of rain.
The NWS warns that this rainfall could cause flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas and near rivers and streams.
Impacts
Flash flooding can be dangerous and can cause significant damage. Impacts may include:
- Rapidly rising water levels
- Flooding of roads, homes, and businesses
- Damage to infrastructure, such as bridges and roads
- Power outages
