New Jersey Will Sue If Trump Violates Laws, AG Warns

State AG Gurbir Grewal says he will challenge any action by Trump administration that hurts New Jersey

TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey's attorney general said Monday he will sue the Trump administration if it takes any action that violates state laws or harms its residents.

Attorney General Gurbir Grewal said in a statement that he is "deeply concerned" about the Trump administration's policies and actions, and that he will not hesitate to take legal action to protect New Jersey's interests.

Grewal said he is particularly concerned about the Trump administration's efforts to restrict immigration, roll back environmental regulations, and cut funding for social programs.

“These policies and actions are not only harmful to New Jersey, but they are also contrary to our values as a nation,” said Grewal, a Democrat.

“I will not stand idly by and watch as the Trump administration undermines the progress we have made in New Jersey,” he said. “I will not hesitate to take legal action to protect New Jersey’s interests.”

Grewal's statement comes as the Trump administration has taken a number of actions that have been challenged in court, including the travel ban on citizens from several Muslim-majority countries and the decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement.

New Jersey has joined other states in filing lawsuits challenging these actions, and Grewal said he is prepared to file additional lawsuits if necessary.

"We will not be bullied by the Trump administration," Grewal said. "We will not allow them to violate our laws or harm our residents."

The Trump administration has not yet commented on Grewal's statement.
