Wild weather wreaks havoc across the state
Queensland has been hit by a series of severe storms, bringing hail, heavy rain and damaging winds to many parts of the state.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued several severe thunderstorm warnings for south-east Queensland, including the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Ipswich.
Hailstones the size of golf balls were reported in some areas, causing damage to cars and homes.
The storms also brought heavy rain, with some areas receiving more than 100mm in a short period of time.
The rain caused flash flooding in some areas, with roads and bridges closed.
The storms also brought damaging winds, with gusts of up to 100km/h reported in some areas.
The winds brought down trees and powerlines, causing power outages to thousands of homes.
The storms are expected to continue throughout the evening, with the BOM warning of further heavy rain, hail and damaging winds.
Residents urged to stay safe
The BOM has urged residents to stay safe during the storms.
People are advised to:
- Stay indoors
- Avoid driving unless necessary
- Be aware of the risk of flash flooding
- Secure loose objects
- Listen to local radio for updates
