Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands Braces For Flash Floods As National Weather Service Issues Warning
San Juan and St. Thomas Under Flash Flood Watch
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flash flood watch for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, including San Juan and St. Thomas, as a tropical wave brings heavy rainfall to the region. The watch is in effect until 8 p.m. AST on Tuesday.
The NWS warns that heavy rainfall could cause flash flooding in urban areas, as well as near streams and rivers. Residents are advised to be prepared for flooding and to take necessary precautions, such as moving to higher ground if necessary.
What is a flash flood?
A flash flood is a sudden, rapid flooding of low-lying areas, typically caused by heavy rainfall. Flash floods can occur within minutes or hours of heavy rain, and can be extremely dangerous.
What should you do during a flash flood?
If you are caught in a flash flood, the NWS recommends that you take the following steps:
- Move to higher ground immediately.
- Do not attempt to walk or drive through floodwaters.
- Stay away from bridges and culverts, as they can be washed out by floodwaters.
- If you are in a car, abandon it and move to higher ground.

There are several things you can do to prepare for a flash flood, including:
- Be aware of the flood risk in your area.
- Have an evacuation plan in place.
- Keep important documents and valuables in a waterproof container.
- Stock up on food and water in case of an emergency.
