University of Illinois Chancellor Robert Jones announced today that he will resign from his position, effective June 30, 2023. Jones has served as Chancellor since 2016 and has overseen a number of major accomplishments during his tenure, including the University's expansion into Chicago.
In a statement, Jones said that he is "proud of the progress that we have made together over the past seven years." He cited the University's increased research funding, improved graduation rates, and expanded access to education as evidence of the University's progress under his leadership.
Jones also thanked the faculty, staff, students, and alumni of the University for their support during his tenure. He said that he is "confident that the University of Illinois will continue to thrive in the years to come."
The University of Illinois Board of Trustees will begin a national search for Jones' replacement immediately. The Board has appointed Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost Andreas Cangellaris as interim Chancellor, effective July 1, 2023.
