Laois hotel fatal assault: Man arrested after death of woman

Gardaí have arrested a US national following the death of a woman at a hotel in Co Laois.

The woman, who was in her 50s, was found unresponsive in a room at the hotel in Portlaoise on Friday night and she was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

A post-mortem examination was carried out on Saturday and the results are not being released for operational reasons.

A man in his 40s was arrested at the scene and he is currently being detained at Portlaoise Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward and they are particularly appealing to anyone who may have been in the vicinity of the hotel between 10pm on Friday and 1am on Saturday.
