Mountaineers Cruise to Victory in Season Opener
WVU Puts on a Show in Front of Home Crowd
The West Virginia Mountaineers opened their 2022-23 season with a resounding 87-59 victory over the UMass Minutemen on Monday night at the WVU Coliseum.
The Mountaineers were led by senior guard Erik Stevenson, who scored a game-high 22 points. Senior forward Tre Mitchell added 16 points and 8 rebounds, while sophomore guard Kobe Johnson chipped in with 13 points.
West Virginia shot 50.0% from the field and 38.1% from three-point range. The Mountaineers also outrebounded UMass 37-25.
UMass was led by senior guard Noah Fernandes, who scored 15 points. Senior forward Matt Cross added 12 points, while sophomore guard Jayden Dottin chipped in with 10 points.
The Minutemen shot 38.7% from the field and 28.6% from three-point range. UMass was also outrebounded by West Virginia 37-25.
The Mountaineers led by just 4 points at halftime, but they pulled away in the second half thanks to a strong shooting performance. West Virginia shot 57.1% from the field and 42.9% from three-point range in the second half.
The victory was a good start for the Mountaineers, who are looking to improve on last season's 16-17 record. West Virginia will be back in action on Friday night when they host the Radford Highlanders at the WVU Coliseum.
