Zoo Tampa Welcomes New Baby Giraffe

Endangered Masai Giraffe Joins the Zoo's Herd

Zoo Tampa is thrilled to announce the birth of a male Masai giraffe calf, the first of its kind to be born at the zoo in 18 years. The calf, named Jabari, was born on February 15th to mother, Asha, and father, Gerald.

Jabari's Arrival Marks a Milestone for Zoo Tampa

Jabari's birth is a significant milestone for Zoo Tampa, as Masai giraffes are an endangered species. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), there are an estimated 32,000 Masai giraffes remaining in the wild, and their population is declining due to habitat loss, poaching, and disease.

Conservation Efforts at Zoo Tampa

Zoo Tampa is actively involved in conservation efforts to protect Masai giraffes and other endangered species. The zoo supports the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, which works to protect giraffes in their natural habitats in Africa. Zoo Tampa also participates in the Species Survival Plan (SSP), which is a cooperative breeding program that aims to maintain genetic diversity within endangered species.

Jabari's Health and Development

Jabari is healthy and growing strong. He stands at approximately 6 feet tall and weighs over 100 pounds. Zookeepers are monitoring Jabari's progress closely and providing him with the best possible care.

Public Viewing

Jabari will make his public debut at Zoo Tampa soon. Visitors will be able to see him in the zoo's Giraffe Encounter area, where they can learn more about Masai giraffes and their conservation status.
