Toledo Sweats Past Wright. St. for 2nd Straight Win
Rockets improve to 9-5 overall, 2-0 in MAC play
Junior guard JT Shumate scores team-high 19 points off the bench
The University of Toledo men's basketball team remained perfect in Mid-American Conference play on Saturday afternoon, holding on to defeat visiting Wright State 86-77 at Savage Arena.
The Rockets, who improved to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in the MAC, placed three players in double figures, including a pair of reserves.
Junior guard JT Shumate led the way with a team-high 19 points off the bench, sinking 7-of-11 shots from the field. Junior guard Ra'Heim Moss added 17 points for UT, followed by senior forward Setric Millner, Jr.'s 14-point performance.
Wright State (5-9) was paced by senior guard Cole Gentry's 23 points. Sophomore forward AJ Braun added 16 points and seven rebounds for the Raiders.
The back-and-forth affair featured 10 lead changes and five ties before the Rockets were able to pull away down the stretch.
Wright State led 49-44 early in the second half after a three-pointer by sophomore guard Amari Davis, but Toledo answered back with an 8-0 run to take a 52-49 advantage.
The lead would change hands three more times before junior forward Rayj Dennis gave the Rockets the lead for good with a layup that made it 60-59 with 8:03 remaining.
Toledo knocked down 8-of-12 shots from the field during that stretch, while holding Wright. St. to just 3-of-10 shooting.
After the Raiders cut the lead to 64-63 on a jumper by senior forward Grant Basile with 4:33 left, the Rockets iced the game with a 9-0 run to extend its lead to 73-63 with 1:17 to go.
Toledo will return to Savage Arena on Tuesday, Jan. 3 to host Eastern Michigan at 7:00 p.m.
