Zverev Kick-Starts Hat-Trick Hunt in Turin With Dominant Win
Alexander Zverev kicked off his ATP Finals campaign with a dominant 6-3, 6-2 win over qualifier Marin Cilic on Monday, as he looks to become the first player since Novak Djokovic in 2015 to win three consecutive titles.
The German broke Cilic's serve twice in the first set and cruised through the second, winning 88% of his first-serve points. He hit 21 winners to Cilic's 10 and won 34 of 44 points on his serve.
Zverev is now 6-1 against Cilic in their career head-to-head and has won their last four meetings.
The 25-year-old is seeking his third ATP Finals title after winning the event in 2018 and 2021. Only Djokovic (six), Roger Federer (six), Pete Sampras (five), and Ivan Lendl (three) have won the tournament three times or more.
Zverev faces Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Red Group on Wednesday.
